Issue SharePoint designer 2013

Image
I have a dutch version of SharePoint designer 2013 and it seems that they made a mistake: They inserted the same text twice but the function behind the checkbox does work correct. I find this really strange, it says: Start Workflow automatically as soon as an item is made Start Workflow automatically as soon as an item is made (when item has changed)

Attack of the drones

Image
"DRONE . A drone is a collective name for pilotless aircraft. But original meaning was and is 'the male of the honeybee and other bees'. This particular kind of the insect through clear associations was connected with such notions as 'one who lives on the labor of others', 'an idler', 'a sluggard'." The most funny thing I ever remember of a drone was the one that was "Hacked" down by the Iran Cyber warfare unit. The Americans said that it never could and really wasn't theirs but after a few weeks they asked it back even though it wouldn't be theirs. America said it malfunctioned and it was  on patrol on the Afghan border. Iran never returned the drone. Slowly I hear more and more news about the use of drones on multiple occasions: For fun you can buy a drone and control it with a remote For checking (oil)pipes across large areas Warfare Surveillance  (border security or protection of a famous person) Disaster inve...

Future in the making (with a 3d printer)

Image
I was reading this article about 3D printers and what it could do for the human body. It amazed me how far we have already come with the 3d printer. Being able to print things like ears, bones and even kidneys is really awesome, and this is just the beginning. Artificial Kidney Take the kidney for example, every day 17 people die, and nearly 4,000 people are added monthly to the waiting list for a transplant (source:  http://www.unckidneycenter.org/25facts.pdf ). Just imagine the waiting list being 1 month for a kidney, your doctor takes the necessary information of you and you wait fo r a month while your kidney is being created. That is truly a future in the making. My second most remarkable innovation is the "skin printing", scientists have found a way to be able to print skin. The possibilities are endless: fire burns, war damage (bomb blasts etc.), tattoo removal etc.. In the far future they want to have a mobile "skin printer" which they can use near ...

Local time zone Office 365

Just a heads up, because you are using Office 365 which is of course cloud based it could be that the time zone is not correct. Do the following steps: 1. In your main site, click Site Actions. 2. Click Site Settings. 3. On the settings page, under Site Administration section, click Regional settings. 4. In the Time Zone section set the Time zone drop-down list to the appropriate zone for you. 5. Check the checkbox All sub-sites inherit the time zone this will make sure every sub-site has the same time zone. BUT! If you build a new sitecollection you have to set the timezone again! 5. Click Ok

Metro style

Image
Everybody may have seen the new Metro UI which Microsoft introduced with Windows 8 and Windows Phone. Some would have hoped they had never seen the interface, some can't live without. Hate it or love it I see the Metro UI style showing up everywhere, especially the tiles. Let's start with some examples: Of course you have the Windows site itself. Very clean site, my personal favorite not a lot of extra's just the needed information. In the past I used to get lost in the Microsoft site, all kinds of links and no real sense of logic. This is thankfully become a lot better.    So let's move on to my old employer Capgemini. They updated their site not to long ago and I had to get used to it in the first place, luckily when you work at the company you don't look on www.Capgemini.com that often. One thing I was not amused with were the amount of bugs in the website, it seemed they wanted to release it before testing it extensively. And the tiles are a litt...

Flash filler

Image
I installed Office 2013 recently and I just wanted to talk about the coolest feature in Excel 2013. Flash filler!! In the past you would have to build a macro to support this, now Excel picks it up by himself. Let's say you have a table with a whole list of names and you want to have only the last 2 letters or the first letter. You just start filling in the first 2 fields and then Excel will do the rest, pretty scary. I think Microsoft really did a good job with this feature, now without having to write a line of code it's done.

Leap Motion

Image
Just watch this: Pretty cool? Ok let's talk about the device: Today I was trying out the new Kickstart project called "Leap Motion". It's a small rectangular device which looks a lot like an iphone (see picture below). Installation of the device is pretty straight forward, there is an URL in the package which gives you access to the installation file. From there on it's walk in the park, next next next and your done.  It's connected with a Micro-usb 3.0 cable which is of course not a strange choice because a lot of data has to pass through very fast. Then the fun begins, you start-up Airspace   and you can select pre-installed apps to use. Of course there is an App store to download more apps for the device. Orientation gives you a good sense of what the small device can do. It shows you exactly what the device is seeing when you put your hand above it. My personal favorite is Flocking your finger is a light in the water and that attra...
