Metro style

Everybody may have seen the new Metro UI which Microsoft introduced with Windows 8 and Windows Phone. Some would have hoped they had never seen the interface, some can't live without. Hate it or love it I see the Metro UI style showing up everywhere, especially the tiles. Let's start with some examples:

Of course you have the Windows site itself. Very clean site, my personal favorite not a lot of extra's just the needed information. In the past I used to get lost in the Microsoft site, all kinds of links and no real sense of logic. This is thankfully become a lot better.

So let's move on to my old employer Capgemini. They updated their site not to long ago and I had to get used to it in the first place, luckily when you work at the company you don't look on www.Capgemini.com that often. One thing I was not amused with were the amount of bugs in the website, it seemed they wanted to release it before testing it extensively. And the tiles are a little bit to big, even with a 22 inch screen I only see the top 2 rows.

Nu.nl is a (free) dutch news site which also updated their tablet App recently. Here they also chose for the metro layout (mostly pictures little text) The Windows 8 people will recognize the metro bar on the side of the screen. A neat app which I really like as my news site.

I'm a huge football fan (I play and watch as much as I can). I mostly follow the soccer news on www.vi.nl. They actually released their new site/app a few days ago. A clean site a lot of white and also the text looks metro style. The only big problem with this site is the big font they are using which makes me scroll a lot (100% size).

So I discussed 4 different sites which all use the metro style interface. Let me put them in order of most favorite till least favorite:

1. Microsoft.com they invented the whole thing and they did a good job using it in their website.
2. Nu.nl especially their app makes a lot of use of the space on a tablet which makes it easy to use
3. Capgemini.com business as usual, what more can I say
4. Vi.nl is my least favorite the amount of scrolling is just too much. The image is very big and with the white spaces at the top including an advertisement I have to start scrolling even before I could start reading. Just shrink the image and make the white spaces at the top smaller.
