Attack of the drones

"DRONE. A drone is a collective name for pilotless aircraft. But original meaning was and is 'the male of the honeybee and other bees'. This particular kind of the insect through clear associations was connected with such notions as 'one who lives on the labor of others', 'an idler', 'a sluggard'."

The most funny thing I ever remember of a drone was the one that was "Hacked" down by the Iran Cyber warfare unit. The Americans said that it never could and really wasn't theirs but after a few weeks they asked it back even though it wouldn't be theirs. America said it malfunctioned and it was on patrol on the Afghan border. Iran never returned the drone.

Slowly I hear more and more news about the use of drones on multiple occasions:

  • For fun you can buy a drone and control it with a remote
  • For checking (oil)pipes across large areas
  • Warfare
  • Surveillance  (border security or protection of a famous person)
  • Disaster investigation
  • Medical treatment
  • Hollywood action (see Oblivion)
The possibilities of drones are immense but they are mostly used in warfare at this moment. The Germans thought of using the drones to send a defibrillator to people who have a heart attack. This drone would fly without human interaction to the victim with the help of GPS pin point through an App. I found the idea really good, at least a positive usage, too bad that the German law prohibits unmanned drones.
In Holland we are also using drones during big events in the cities (for example Queensday). They fly over the city and send video back to base, this way busy places in the city can be taken care of.

A few posts back I talked about using Leapmotion how you could use it to control Google Earth. I would find it really neat to combine it all; use leapmotion with Google earth and a Drone to fly. Not a simple fly-by-wire system but a real floating hand used to control the aircraft.
How is the future looking? Well with Google working hard on selling their driver less car and drones being used for all kinds of purposes I think it's going to be a busy road and street. People are always concerned about their privacy but just think of what a Drone can record and do? It can follow you all day from and to work.

Shooting at an unmanned aircraft could result in criminal or civil liability, just as would firing at a manned airplane.SOURCE: GOERIE.COM 2013-08-24 21:38:00
